Wifi 6: Faster | More Secure | Reliable, Really??

WiFi 6 is real and it will soon be the main stream standard that your router or mobile devices or smartphone uses. But what it is? and how it's gonna make any difference in our lives? is it going to be more secure? faster? reliable? Let's check it out.

WiFi stands for (Wireless fidelity) although the name doesn't make sense, but the generations of these WiFi can make a huge impact on how we use the internet. Specially in today's world where we constantly use the high bandwidth demanding apps and constantly require the high speed internet. But from where does WiFi 6 pop up? where's 5,4,3,2,1? WiFi alliance has made it clear that the future generations of WiFi will be having simple numbers along with standards like 802.11ac or 802.11ax. These numbers would also be reflected in the software so that you can know which is your current WiFi generations and with which you are connecting and what's the speed and every other thing.

Here are the versions of Wi-Fi you’ll  be seeing:

WiFi 4 is 802.11n, released in 2009.

WiFi 5 is 802.11ac, released in 2014.

WiFi 6 is the new version, also known as 802.11ax. It’s scheduled for release in 2019.

WiFi 5 has a maximum theoretical speed of 3.5 Gbps and WiFi 6 will be having the maximum theoretical speed of 9.6 Gbps. According to the statistica Singapore is on top of the world when it comes to fast internet, with an average download speed of 60.39 Mbps that is not even 1 percent of the total available speed of WiFi 5. So what do we do with the WiFi 6? 

The simple and realistic answer is instead of boosting the speed for individual devices, WiFi 6 is all about improving the network when a bunch of devices are connected. That means more speed for each device. It comes handy when you have a bunch of device in your home and all the device trying to get the same speed then comes the problem of distributing the same speed to each device. WiFi 6 solves this problem by implementing new technologies that help each device get their share of speed without compromising the network speed and creating a cluttered mess for your router. 

HOW TO GET ON WIFI 6?

Honestly speaking this isn't some sort of software update, it's a perfect combination of hardware and software. WiFi generations rely on new hardware, not just software updates, so you’ll need to buy new phones, laptops to taste one. But it isn't going to be just a one device implementation that's gonna be a whole revolution which will take some time and gonna need some effort from the device manufacturers too. However don't feel like once the new device comes the old ones will get obsolete, they'll still be used but are less likely to get the new and added benefits of WiFi 6.

SECURE AND RELIABLE?

Current generations WiFi uses the wpa3 protocol as an option because wpa2 is in wide use. With the new generation WiFi 6 the wpa3 protocol will become the inherent one and will provide more security from hackers and MITM attacks.
