Alert! You are under surveillance!

What if today some official from government tells you that your online activity has been monitored or watched by the government officials? From your personal messages to what you buy and watch over internet? Doesn’t that sound too scary? Someone anonymous knows more about us than we used to.

A similar incident took place back in 2003, in America, Edward Joseph Snowden an American computer professional, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, and former contractor for the United States government, secretly copied and leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many run by the NSA and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance, with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments.

While such type of incident is not likely to happen in India, but it’s definitely an alarming situation that asks us to be ready for such state sponsored attacks and surveillance programs. Such programmes are carried out by the government, with an excuse of identifying and reducing the terrorism threats and planning, but then what about the privacy of crores of netizens?

This also proves that the government understands the need of having a cyber-army and thinks that the next war is going to be the war over internet. But as far as India’s current situation is concerned, we are more likely to lose this war.
